This 1920s Austin home had lost some of its original charm through a poorly integrated addition completed in the 1980s. While the expansion added square footage, it also created a series of small, disconnected rooms with awkward circulation. The new owners envisioned a home that honored its historic character while providing the openness, comfort, and functionality expected of modern living. Wheelhouse responded by working with the clients’ architect to reimagine the floor plan, transforming the fragmented addition into a light-filled primary suite and creating a more cohesive home overall.

Throughout the home, thoughtful design decisions help bridge the gap between historic architecture and the owners' collection of iconic mid-century furnishings and accessories. Floral wallpapers, coordinated textiles, and custom upholstery introduce layers of color and pattern, while carefully preserved architectural elements maintain a connection to the home's past.

Attention to detail is evident at every scale, from custom millwork profiles and integrated appliances to the preservation of a cherished chandelier relocated from the original dining room. New furnishings and finishes were selected to complement the clients' existing collection, creating interiors that feel curated rather than decorated, and allowing vintage design pieces to coexist naturally within a refreshed and highly functional home.
